So you want to begin your new life together in surroundings fit for a king? Then spend your honeymoon in one of the Sightsleeping Hotels in Bavaria. Thirty-four hotels from medieval Rabenstein Castle, which overlooks a valley on a mountain plateau, to Pommersfelden Palace in all its 18th century splendour, have teamed up under this banner. Wake up together in a historical palace, then go for a post-breakfast stroll in the surrounding park – can you think of a better way to begin married life? Grace and grandeur can also be found in Saxony, and particularly in Dresden. A suitably spectacular hotel is easily found in this baroque city and you can time your visit to coincide with the Semper Opera Ball in one of the world's most famous opera houses. Even sightseeing in Dresden has a touch of romance about it. The horse-drawn carriage rides will make you feel like a prince and princes.

ess extravagant but equally elegant are Germany's 'Romantik' hotels, which number more than one hundred. These small, privately run hotels offer modern luxuries and impeccable service in historical settings – from a lovingly restored medieval house in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Quedlinburg to charming city residences in northern Germany.

Many of these hotels also double as venues for the big day itself. Can you think of anything more romantic than getting married at a castle or palace and holding your reception there afterwards? Different regions cater for different needs, some of them highly specific. In northern Germany, for example, couples can tie the knot in a lighthouse, and other places to exchange vows include flower-filled parks, beaches, ships, a windmill and even a cable car to a backdrop of panoramic views. Heide-Park in Soltau gives a new meaning to having butterflies in your stomach. 'Honeymoon' rollercoaster rides at the theme park are a common sight and provide a white-knuckle start to your new life as a couple!

Or why not spend your big holiday together in one of Germany's cities? Musicals, theatre, concerts, exhibitions and the fantastic nightlife give you plenty of opportunity to enjoy quality time as a couple.
